MilePost Zero: Caravan Event and Quest Guide

Updated: Oct 16

With thanks Coffee888 and SugarBombsRads.

***SUBJECT TO CHANGE PORTING TO LIVE SERVERS***

This guide is broken up into the following sections:

  • Quest

  • Map Marker

  • Caravan Costs, Discounts and Rewards

  • Supplies

  • Vendors

  • Event

Quest

You'll need to complete a short questline to start and run your own caravans. However, you don’t need to start or finish the quest line to earn supplies when participating in other players' caravans.

The quest will appear in your Pip-Boy and in the top right corner of your screen once you load into the game for the first time after the patch.

Head to Stony Man Lookout in Skyline Valley to investigate the flare.

If the quest doesn’t automatically start after the update, head over to Stony Man Lookout, and the quest should trigger. If it still doesn’t pop up, check your settings: go to Main Menu > Settings > Game and ensure that "Main Quests/Side Quests Active When Started" is turned on.

Locate Luke and his holotape.

Listen to the holotape and retrieve the cargo from the Brahmin.

Then, head to MilePost Zero to return the cargo to its owner, Marley.

You may need to fast-travel to the nearest map marker and then run the rest of the way.

Enter MilePost Zero via the door and you will walk into a conversation between Marley and Joanna.

There will be some dialogue to complete. Once finished, Marley will ask if you want to work for her.

If you agree, you’ll need to pay a fee of 500 caps.

After paying, select [Start Event] in the dialogue.

The caravan event will begin. It will appear in the Activities tab, and a unique map marker will show on the map.

Other players can join your caravan, and since it’s considered a public event, participants can fast-travel for free. However, because it’s not fully treated as a public event, the no-drop loot rule doesn’t apply. So be mindful of what you're carrying and try to avoid dying!

Complete the caravan event and return to Marley.

Marley will reward you with:

  • 500 base XP

  • 50 base Caps

  • 100 Supplies

You'll also receive an additional 10 supplies for completing the caravan event.

After completing the quest, speak to Marley to hire a vendor. You can choose any vendor to hire first—it doesn't matter which one you pick, as hiring any vendor will unlock the next step.

I recommend starting by hiring Josie the Brahmin Tamer (for 100 supplies) and purchasing the Cattle Encourager (Move Speed Increase 01) from her for another 100 supplies.

Don’t forget to talk to Josie to change your Brahmin’s name.

Once you’ve hired a vendor, speak to Marley again, and she’ll offer you the option to take on larger shipments. These shipments provide more supplies but come at a higher cap cost. Additionally, after hiring a vendor, Marley will reward you with her Snow Globe plan as a bonus.

Remember, you need to hire at least one vendor to unlock the option for larger shipments. Otherwise, Marley will continue offering only small shipments.

If you want to run Caravan events back-to-back without waiting for the cooldown period, Marley will charge an insurance fee, which matches the cost of a shipment based on its size.

Caravan Event Costs:

  • Small Shipment – 100 caps

  • Medium Shipment – 400 caps

  • Large Shipment – 1200 caps

However, if you wait for the designated cooldown period, you can get discounts on the shipment costs.

Caravan Event Discounts (based on cooldown period):

  • 100 cap discount – Wait 1 real-life hour between events

  • 400 cap discount – Wait 4 real-life hours between events

  • 1000 cap discount – Wait 10 real-life hours between events

The shipment and insurance prices only change based on the cooldown period. Charisma, food buffs, or perk cards won’t lower the cost.

And now, the grind begins!

Map Marker:

Once unlocked, you can fast-travel directly to MilePost Zero.

MilePost Zero has two travel points: you can either load directly inside or to the exterior.

To unlock the map marker, run under the walkway connected to the main gate,

Then turn left and enter the Pitt Stop area and head towards the green tent. Enter the green tent and the map marker should unlock.

Supplies

What are Supplies?

Supplies are rewards earned from completing Caravan events.

They are used to hire

and rank up your vendors

as well as to purchase permanent buffs for your Brahmin.

The dialogue lines will appear in red if you don’t have enough supplies to make a purchase or upgrade.

You can use the calculator here to determine how many supplies you’ll need for each vendor hire.

Vendors

There are six vendors you can hire, each offering something unique.

To access a vendor's inventory, plans, and upgrade to the next tier, you must go through all of their dialogue options. This needs to be done before upgrading to the next tier. If the option to upgrade doesn’t show up in Marley’s dialogue, even though you have enough supplies, it likely means you missed part of the conversation. Simply return to the vendor and complete any unfinished dialogue, and the upgrade option will become available.

Caravan Decorator

Axel, alongside their companion Gyro, offers caravan decoration themes. Starting with a Blue Ridge theme by default, you can hire Axel for 125 Supplies and upgrade to unlock Military, Antiques, and Cultist decoration themes. Axel also offers a daily quest with rewards like junk items, fresh food, or a Snow Globe plan.

Note: You need to go through all dialogues to unlock their upgrades and inventory.

Imported Goods Merchant

Ineke sells a variety of rare plans and bulk materials, making her a great vendor for those looking for new apparel and camp items. She can be hired for 150 Supplies, and her stock includes Persian rugs, outfits, snow globes, and bulk crafting supplies. Fully upgrading her unlocks several Snow Globe plans, including her own personal Snow Globe.

Note: Complete all her dialogue options before each tier upgrade.

Brahmin Tamer

Josie offers permanent buffs for your Brahmin to make Caravan events easier, such as increasing health, resistance, and speed. She can be hired for 100 Supplies, and upgrading her unlocks additional buffs like damage reflection and health regeneration. After upgrading and completing her dialogues, you'll receive a plan for her Snow Globe.

Note: You’ll need Addictol and Calmex to unlock all her dialogue options.

Ammo Merchant

Theodore provides a wide range of ammunition and unlocks the quest for the V63 Laser Carbine at Tier 2. He can be hired for 150 Supplies, and upgrading him gives access to ammo plans and special laser weapon mods. After completing his quest, you'll get a plan for his Snow Globe.

Note: You must finish the Skyline Valley Vault 63 Questline to access certain areas for Theo's quest.

Windy

Cryptid Hunter

Will be added to the game with Patch 55 (Dec/Jan 2024)

Windy is a Cryptid Hunter you can hire for 200 Supplies, offering unique items and plans related to cryptids. Her inventory includes cryptid-themed gear, bait to summon specific cryptid bosses, and rare crafting materials. Upgrading Windy unlocks more cryptid-related plans, such as outfits and the Ogua Shell Throne. At Tier 3, she offers rare items like the Gulper Skin Outfit and Wendigo Teeth. Windy also gives out a personal Snow Globe once fully upgraded.

Note: You can use Cryptid Bait for 10 Supplies to change the end boss of a Caravan Event, to creatures like the Mothman, Sheepsquatch, or Blue Devil.

Collector Murmrgh

Mystery Crate Merchant

Will be added to the game with Patch 55 (Dec/Jan 2024)

For 200 supplies, you can hire Collector Murmrgh, who sells region-specific mystery boxes. These boxes contain a mix of items, including ammo, scrip, apparel, food and drink, junk, and raw ingredients.

Note: The option to hire Collector Murmrgh is unlocked once you have hired and upgraded all the other vendors to tier 3.

Event

This event is geared towards combat-ready or end-game players, as the enemies are fast, tough, and numerous. If you’re not fully prepared for battle, it’s highly recommended to run the event as part of a team, where you can take turns covering the shipment cost. If you do team up, it’s a good idea to have one person act as the designated healer, focusing solely on keeping the Brahmin’s health bar full.

While the event on your screen might show the name of your character, to everyone else, it will just show as your GT/IGN/PSN.

You can heal the Brahmin by using a few specific methods. Equip the revised Medic's Legendary effect, or use a weapon with a fire mod (or any weapon that deals fire damage) along with the Friendly Fire perk card under Charisma to restore the Brahmin’s health during the event. I run a Medic Explosive Automatic Laser Rifle just for the event.

When healing the Brahmin, make sure you’re hitting the animal itself and not the cargo on its back. If you hit the cargo, it won’t heal—you need to target the Brahmin directly.

Once Marley has started the event, fast-travel to the marked location on your map. Your main objective is to escort and protect the Brahmin as it follows its route. Stay close to ensure its safety, and once you reach the end of the route, deposit the cargo into the designated cargo box.

Avoid running in front of the Brahmin, as this can disrupt its path and may cause it to stop or get stuck.

You can use the Hurry Function to speed up the Brahmin’s movement, with no cooldown or penalty. However, this function is disabled when enemies, obstacles, or event scenes are nearby.

The number of challenges you’ll face during the event depends on the size of your shipment, ranging from 1 to 3 encounters. These challenges can include enemy attacks, obstacles, or scenes.

Obstacles

  • Trees

  • Crates

  • Settler Bodies

Scenes

These scenes are optional and can be ignored, but some can attack or injure the Brahmin, so it's best to interact with them. "Trick or Treat" is my favorite—try to stick around until the end if you can!

  • Injured Citizen

  • Trick or Treat

  • Broken Down Caravan

  • Malfunctioning Robot

Enemies

In addition to the enemies that spawn as part of the event, you may also encounter random enemies along the road that aren't part of the event but will still try to attack your Brahmin.

Creature vs. Creature

  • Ogua vs. Blue Devil

  • Lost vs. Ghouls

Enemy Waves

  • Liberators

  • Mirelurks

  • Lost

  • Blood Eagles

  • Wolves

  • Wendigos

  • RadTurkeys

  • Cultists

  • Mole Miners

  • Super Mutants

Boss Encounters

  • Deathclaw

  • Yao Guai

  • Sheepsquatch*

  • Ogua*

  • Blue Devil*

  • MegaSloth

  • Honey Beast

  • Grafton Monster*

  • Flatwoods Monster*

*These cryptids have a chance to spawn as a boss if you purchase Cryptid Bait from Windy, the Cryptid Hunter.

When you get close to the cargo deposit box (around 100 feet away), a boss will spawn. You’ll need to defeat this boss before completing the event. Ensure the Brahmin survives the encounter, then deposit the cargo in the Drop Box to finish.

Tips and Extra Event Information:

Keep in mind that only three caravan events can be active on a server at once. If three are already running, Marley will still take your caps but won’t start your event. Make sure to check how many caravans are active before starting yours.

After successfully defending the Brahmin against an enemy wave and seeing the task marked as "Completed," stay alert! Enemies may continue to spawn for up to a minute afterward and will keep attacking the Brahmin.

The Brahmin cannot be damaged by exploding vehicles.

Other players can use the "Hurry" function on your Brahmin and even deposit the cargo in the Drop Box, regardless of whether you are the Caravan Owner.

Once the "Defend the Brahmin" task is marked as "Completed" and the prompt to deposit the cargo appears, it's crucial to keep the Brahmin alive. If the Brahmin dies before the cargo is deposited in the Drop Box, the event will fail.

If you're joining another player's caravan, you can determine the size of the shipment by checking the size of the load the Brahmin is carrying. However, if the server is lagging, it might incorrectly display as a small shipment, even if it's a large one.

FAQ

Can I build MilePost Zero as a team with other players?

No, the MilePost tunnel functions like a Shelter, meaning it is a personal instance just for you. While your teammates or other players can enter the tunnel with you, they won't be able to interact with the vendors, Marley, or make any purchases.

If I haven’t completed the quest, can I run my own caravans?

No, you can't. However, the quest only takes about 5 minutes to complete and rewards you with supplies, so it’s definitely worth doing.

If I haven't started or completed the quest, can I earn supplies as a participant?

No, you must COMPLETE the questline first, to earn supplies as a participant.

Note: As of Patch 55 (Dec/Jan 2024) you do not need to start or complete the quest to earn rewards as a participant.

Why can’t I rank up my vendors?

To rank up your vendors, you need to speak with each one between tiers and go through all of their dialogue options. Once that's done, talk to Marley to unlock the upgrade. If the option to upgrade isn't showing, it usually means you've missed part of the conversation, so you'll need to return to the vendor and complete the dialogue.

If you've completed and unlocked all the dialogue but don't have enough supplies, the upgrade option will not appear in Marley’s menu, until you gather the necessary supplies.

Why is my shipment or insurance cost never a flat 1200 caps, 400 caps, or 100 caps?

The cost of your shipment or insurance isn’t always a flat rate because it’s based on how much time has passed between your caravan events. The longer you wait, the more the price goes down. The discount is calculated per minute.

For example, if you finish a caravan in 8 minutes and then start another one right away, you’ll get a small discount. After 8 minutes, the discount is about 13 caps.

Here’s how the prices would look after an 8-minute wait:

  • Large Shipment: 1187 caps (instead of 1200)

  • Medium Shipment: 387 caps (instead of 400)

  • Small Shipment: 87 caps (instead of 100)

The price drops the longer you wait between events, with a maximum discount of 1000 caps.
