Charisma and Barter Prices: How It Works

In Fallout 76, your Charisma stat affects how much you pay when buying items and how much you earn when selling them to vendors. The higher your Charisma, the better your prices – you’ll pay less when buying and get more caps when selling.

How Charisma Changes Prices

Buying Price Modifier: This multiplier changes the price you pay when buying from vendors. Higher Charisma makes this multiplier go down, so you get closer to the item’s actual base price.

  • Formula: Base Price × Buying Price Modifier = Final Buying Price

  • Example Item (45 Caps Base Price):

    • At 1 Charisma: 45 caps × 2.5 = 112.5 caps.

    • At 25 Charisma: 45 caps × 1.75 = 78.75 caps.

    • At 100 Charisma: 45 caps × 1.0 = 45 caps.

Selling Price Modifier: This multiplier affects how many caps you get when selling to vendors. Higher Charisma means a better multiplier, so you get closer to the item’s base value.

  • Formula: Base Price × Selling Price Modifier = Final Selling Price

  • Example Item (45 Caps Base Price):

    • At 1 Charisma: 45 caps × 0.1 = 4.5 caps.

    • At 25 Charisma: 45 caps × 0.25 = 11.25 caps.

    • At 100 Charisma: 45 caps × 0.625 = 28.125 caps.

Best Charisma Level for the Best Prices

The sweet spot for the best overall buying and selling prices is 25 Charisma:

  • At 25 Charisma: You pay only 1.75 times the item’s base price and get 25% of the base value when selling.

    • Example Item (45 Caps Base Price):

      • Buying: 45 caps × 1.75 = 78.75 caps

      • Selling: 45 caps × 0.25 = 11.25 caps

After 25 Charisma, buying prices keep getting a little better, but the selling price only improves in small steps. So, for most players, 25 Charisma is a good balance without needing to max out Charisma.

Key Limits at Higher Charisma

  • Buying Price Cap: At 100 Charisma, you pay the item’s base value (1.0 multiplier).

  • Selling Price Cap: At 100 Charisma, you can sell items for up to 62.5% of their base value, which is the best selling price.
