There are 28 named companions in Starfield.

Location: Where or how to find them.
Cost: How much to hire them. The price can vary from 7,500 credits to 30,000 credits, depending on the traits that you pick earlier in the game.
Skills: What buffs and benefits do they bring to the relationship.
Romanceable: Can you receive the Emotional Security XP buff from them.
Dislikes: This will affect your affinity with the companion.
Weapon:
Max carry weight: The maximum amount of items you can load your companion up with, not including items and perks that can buff carry weight.
Outfit:
Companion Skills explained
Only ship and outpost-based companion skills will be applied to your character, outposts, and spaceships.
For example:
Andreja has Particle Beams rank 3 as a stat, so your ship will gain "Ship particle beam weapons do 20% more damage, and Targeting mode cost is reduced by 20%". The Theft and Stealth skills are applied to the companion only and not the player.
If a companion has skills such as Geology, Gastronomy, or Xenosociology, then they will gift you items based on that stat such as organic and inorganic resources and food buffs. The companions will offer a gift once every in-game day.
If a companion has a weapon-based stat such as Demolitions or Pistol Certification, those skills are applied to the companion's weapons. If you equip your companions with weapons that match their skills and perks, the weapons will be buffed accordingly.
Crew skills do not stack with other crew skills. The crew with the highest rank skill will apply to your ship or outpost.
Dislikes explained
Civilian Combat
The player is in combat with a person the companion considers to be a civilian (ie non-combatant / innocent). This is effectively "I can't be a part of this combat" - and will also trigger an auto dismissal.
Civilian Murder
The player killed a person the companion considers to be a civilian (ie non-combatant / innocent). This is effectively "I can't believe you just murdered that person." - it will also trigger an auto dismissal and anger state.
If a companion doesn't have certain likes or dislikes under their name, then it means that their affinity is not affected by anything that you do or say.
Affinity
4 levels of Affinity
0 - Neutral
1 - Friendship
2 - Affection
3 - Commitment
In Starfield, they handle something called 'affinity' differently compared to Fallout 76's 'reputation' system. Affinity involves two separate things: 'points' and 'levels.'
The 'points' don't directly determine your 'level.' It seems like the 'points' system is carried over from a previous game (Fallout 4), but they're now using a different approach. Instead of accumulating points, the game seems to set your affinity level based on your actions and choices in quests and dialogues.
For example, at 500 points, you become 'friendly,' even if you haven't reached the specific trigger for that level. Some checks in the game's code are like: 'If affinity is greater than 500 or affinity tier is 1, do this,' and 'If affinity is less than 500 or affinity tier is 0, don't do this.'
The game may also directly set your friendship level to 1 in certain situations, regardless of the points you have.
Another change is how relationships work. In the past (Fallout 4), relationships were determined by points, so if you had enough points, characters would act as if you were in a romantic relationship with them, even if you didn't choose that path. In Starfield, the system is more explicit. Your actions and dialog choices directly impact your relationships, and you can't just accumulate points by pickpocketing or killing to improve your affinity level as you could in Fallout 4.
In summary, it seems that the 'points' system in Starfield doesn't play a significant role, and the game focuses more on your explicit actions and dialog choices to shape your relationships and affinity levels.
The companion with the highest affinity will be the one to perish during the main questline so plan your romancing accordingly.
Backup Location
If you switch to a smaller ship with fewer crew seats, or if the game bugs out and crew members disappear from your crew roster, you can fast-travel to the backup location to find them and assign them again. You will not need to pay their hiring fee again.
Your crew roster will tell you where the crew member currently is.
If you see 'Unknow Location' in the Assignment box, it means that your companion is still traveling to their backup location. Wait 10 minutes or exit the game to the main menu, then reload back in. The Assignment box should have been updated and your companion will be waiting at their backup location.
To view your crew roster, go to Menu > Ship (left bottom corner) > Y (Crew).
If you still can not find your companion, after following the above steps, unassign them from their position, wait 10 minutes, and travel to their backup location.
